Special Olympics

As a coach people always ask me, "How was Special Olympics?" I appreciate their desire to know how my athletes did in the competitions, however there is something about Special Olympics that you just can't explain. I wish every teacher, student, and parent could attend Special Olympics and just take it all in. There is nothing like it. Words can not do it justice. No other sporting event compares to it. The athletes enthusiasm is contagious. Their determination relentless. Their passion inspiring. The pride in their eyes when that medal is placed around their neck is tear jerking. If you ever get the chance to attend Special Olympics take the opportunity. I guarantee you won't regret it.

This poem is an acrostic spelling out Special Olympics

Something is different about them
Perhaps it’s how they look or communicate
Except those things don’t matter here
Competitions don’t focus on appearance or brains
Instead they focus on the heart
Athletes ooze passion and energy
Loved dearly by their coaches and fans

Olympics can’t be described unless you have been there
Looked into the blazing eyes of a victorious runner
Yelled and cheered for a special someone
Marveled at the strength of each competitor
Pumped your fist in pride
Inspired them to never quit
Cried with joy when they lift their medals high
Something is different about them
