Sky on Fire

So, over spring break my husband and I, along with some friends, visited Rogers, Arkansas. We spent a relaxing few days at a lovely cabin overlooking a lake. Our first night their the sunset was incredible! It was as if God was showing off His handiwork. The view inspired me. I tweaked a previously written nonet and came up with the below one. In case you don't know, a Nonet is a nine line poem, first line containing 9 syllables, second line 8, third line 7 and so on) Hope you enjoy it!

Picture from the cabin deck

Sky on Fire:

The Creator’s paintbrush strokes the clouds.
Hues of pink and purple ribbons,
Dancing shades intrigue the eye,
bursting into orange.
Sky ablaze tonight,
God’s masterpiece,
breathtaking
sunset
glow.

Spoof of Seuss

As a teacher I love reading Dr. Seuss books to my students! And today, in honor of his birthday, I have written a short story.

I have titled it "Confetti for the Yeti." It contains a lot of rhymes and high end words designed to stregthen students vocabulary, which have been starred. I hope you enjoy my silly, heart warming story! Also please feel free to leave me a comment with any helpful feedback.

Confetti for the Yeti:

There once was a Yeti,
Whose life was quite *petty.
And each night he ate a large bowl of spaghetti.

One night while the yeti,
Was cooking spaghetti
He heard a loud RAP RAP on his door.
He jumped and gave a startled ROAR.
Who could it be?
He must go and see.
Opening the door he saw only a *parcel,
Which was wrapped something awful.

So the curious yeti,
ignoring burning spaghetti
Wielded his *machete
and SLICE!
To the surprise of the yeti,
All he saw inside was colorful confetti!

Had he been *bamboozled?
The yeti sat down *befuddled.
Then he saw it,
A *billet!
It simply said, “Meet me at the *jetty,
By Five o’clock, signed Betty.”

Hmmm confetti from Betty,
Puzzled the yeti.
Then SIZZLE, SPUTTER, SIZZLE,
Smoke billowed from his pot of spaghetti!

The poor yeti had burned his spaghetti,
And still had no idea about Betty who sent him the confetti.
He had no choice but journey to the jetty,
With his machete gripped in a hand so sweaty.

As he arrived at the jetty,
He saw a shadow,
Could it be Betty?

Slowly the figure drew near
Close enough a voice he could hear
“My son” she said
“I thought you were dead,
But now I’ve found you ok
And on your birthday.”

Shocked by her words
The yeti remembers the blizzard,
He recalls being lost in the snow
Waking up alone to zero below BRR.

The cold had frozen his memory
But he’d always wondered if he had a mommy.
It seemed to good to be true,
They had been reunited out of the blue.

The yeti and his mother embraced,
Tears of joy falling from each face.
The box of confetti a symbol from Betty
Of her celebration and joy in finding young yeti.

Vocabulary Words:
*petty- not very important or serious
*parcel- package, large box or envelope
*machete- a large knife
*bamboozled- to trick or confuse
*befuddled- confused, perplexed
*billet- brief letter or note
*jetty- a long structure that is built out into water and used as a place to get on, get off, or tie up a boat

Snow Days

You just have to love snow days. Crystal flakes falling from the sky, covering the ground in all directions... It's a beautiful sight!

All this snow has inspired a cinquain poem. Writing a cinquain is quite easy, you simply pick a noun. That noun makes up your entire first line. The second line contains two adjectives describing your noun, third line three verbs, fourth line a sentence or feeling, and the fifth line a one word synonym relating back to the noun in line one. Short and sweet!

Here is the one I wrote about a snowflake...

Snowflake
Intricate, fragile
Dancing, sparkling, vanishing
* Weaver of winter’s blanket
Flurry

* Weaver in the poem refers to Christ (Job 38:22 and Psalms 147:16-17)

Now its your turn! Leave me a comment with your own original cinquain.

Polar Plunge Poetry

This is the third year I have braved the Polar Plunge. Despite unbearably cold conditions hundreds plunge year after year for a great cause- Special Olympics!! I have written a poem to hopefully explain the reason behind the heart of a Plunger such as myself.

Something Special:

Cold
Icy
Frigid
Frozen
A Plunger’s body numbs,
Yet their warm heart beats an anthem.

Respect
Appreciation
Credit
Admiration
A Plunger’s esteem of athlete’s
Yields bravery to face absence of heat.

Determination
Courage
Strength
Tenacity
A Special Olympian’s mindset,
Enduring through toil and sweat

Perseverance
Soul
Passion
Resilience
A Special Olympian’s heartbeat,
Soaring to bold new feats.

“Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” –Special Olympian oath

Leave me a comment as to why/how you support Special Olympic athletes! To make a donation to Special Olympics please visit www.sook.org/donate.html

Reflections

It's been a while since I have written. I guess my New Years resolution should be to write more frequently lol. Here are some reflections as the new year approaches... Hope you have a blessed New Year!

As 2014 comes to a close
What if my life froze
And you looked thru my soul’s window
At my highs and lows
My selfish ego
Dreams on pillow
What I listen to on the stereo
Watched on TV and video
Everything I did in dark shadows
All would be exposed
Did it please my Lord, make His face glow?

Does my one life really matter
Or is it just an ungodly clatter?

The future is unforeseen
So how do I want to live in 2015.
Would they describe my life as pristine
Or obscene?
Did I obsess and compare myself with models in the magazine
Or live hot tempered and solitary like the wolverine?
Or put on a mask like someone at Halloween?
Is my mood determined by an amount nicotine or caffeine?
Or did I strive to lean
On the Savior and from His Word glean?

Does my one life really matter?
Or is it just an ungodly clatter?

Did I miss an opportunity?
Neglect my responsibility?
Express animosity?
Lose credibility?
Parent absently?
Worry anxiously?
Respond critically?
Speculate judgmentally?
Were my actions honoring to the Almighty?

Does my one life really matter?
Or is it just an ungodly clatter?

Would my life be characterized by such an adjective
As Abusive
Defensive
Exhaustive
Distractive
Lucrative
Aggressive
Offensive
Or passive
Despite my past God says “I will forgive
The shameful way you live
I came to set you free from the sin that holds you captive.
Give you a life fruitful and active.”

“Your life really does matter
It’s not a purposeless clatter.”

“And my child just incase
You forgot I can erase
All your sin, shame, and disgrace
My arms are open for your embrace
My hand for you to interlace

Commit this year to truly give Me first place
So when I see your face
You’ll be called good and faithful at the end of the race
Now rise, pick up your feet and quicken the pace
To spread the good news of My amazing grace.
As 2015 you embrace”

A Note From God

I wrote this when I needed to remember who and Whose I was. May it be a blessing and encouragement to you ! I call it "A Note From God."

Dear Child,

Did you like that sunrise I painted?
How the pink and purple hues collided into orange.
I make brush strokes of color splash across the heavens,
every morning just for you.

What about the gentle rain shower?
It's sweet smell making the earth fresh and new.
For you too.

The host of stars in the dark night sky?
I light it up each evening for you.
All for you.

That maple tree arrayed in splendor?
How its leaves of orange and yellow swirl to the ground.
Yep, I designed it with you in mind.

Look around you child,
taste and see.
It's all a daily gift from Me.

But wait, there's more.
Want to see My most precious and prized creation?
Take a look in the mirror.
That's right My child,
it's you!

All My Love,
God

Now, let us go live this week in the confidence that a Child of God should have!

Happy Fall Ya'll

Happy Fall Ya'll

I apologize for being remiss in my blogging. Things have gotten busy at work and home. No excuses though. Here is a poem to help welcome fall, enjoy! It is a backwards nonet that I call "Autumn's Kaleidoscope."

Fall
creates
melodies
so beautiful.
Leaves crunch and crackle.
Golden brown, red, and orange
switching partners as they glide,
waltzing thru the cool auburn skies.
       Leaves swirl in autumn’s kaleidoscope.
